Seabed Fossil Split Face Limestone is an incredibly distinct architectural stone. Because it is formed from ancient sedimentary layers, it contains genuine, visible skeletal fragments of marine organisms, coral, and small shells embedded directly in its face.

The 12mm thickness is a highly specific, lightweight engineering profile. Traditional stone cladding typically runs 20mm to 40mm thick, which adds immense weight to a wall. At 12mm, this stone behaves similarly to a standard heavy-duty tile, making it exceptionally versatile for internal feature walls, fireplaces, and light commercial facades.

12mm Installation Realities

Because it is sliced thin at 12mm, it has distinct installation requirements compared to thick, chunky stone slips:

• Substrate Preparation: The wall behind it must be perfectly rigid and completely flat. Unlike 30mm thick stone—where the installer can use extra-thick mortar to cheat out an unlevel wall—a 12mm tile will mirror any bowing or warping in the underlying substrate.

• Adhesive Selection: Use a premium, polymer-modified, high-flexibility (Class S1 or S2) tile adhesive. Because limestone is calcium-based and highly sensitive to moisture staining, a white, fast-setting adhesive is highly recommended to prevent dark mortar tracking from bleeding through the stone.

• No Grout Layout: Split face cladding is designed to be dry-stacked (butted tightly together without grout lines) to let the natural shadows create depth.

Aesthetics & Variations

• The Palette: Expect a soft, neutral baseline of warm creams, sandy beiges, and ivory tones, intermixed with occasional gold or ochre highlighting.

• The Fossils: The split-face process naturally fractures the stone along its weakest structural points—which are often the edges of the embedded prehistoric shells. This exposes beautiful, cross-sectional views of the fossils rather than hiding them.

Crucial Maintenance Note: Limestone is chemically vulnerable to acids. Never use acid-based cleaners (like hydrochloric acid brick wash) to clean up post-installation mortar haze, or you will permanently etch and dissolve the delicate surface details of the fossils. Stick to pH-neutral stone soaps.
